OLD CENTRALIANS 33 TROWBRIDGE 13

Match report courtesy of Alistair Morrison

Two weeks on from their victory over Keynsham in their previous match, Trowbridge travelled to the Saintbridge Centre to face the only team who have triumphed at Doric Park this season. They were without kicker Tom Weaver in October, and were unchanged from the Keynsham match except for the unavailability of Lee Fairclough who was replaced at prop in the squad by Paul Metcalfe. In their first excursion into the Cents half, Weaver kicked a long range penalty, but the Gloucester side scored soon after when the teams had been in the Trowbridge 22 for several minutes. Their flanker Jack Rowe forced his way over the line after 12 minutes and centre Liam Henning converted. Territorially play was quite even at this stage and Trowbridge advanced to the home 22, but after 22 minutes they were pressing when a wayward pass was intercepted by Cents winger Jevan Brown who ran the length of the field to score. The try was converted by Henning.

Both sides were playing attractive rugby but the defences were up to the task. Neither side could break through, but with the interval approaching the Trowbridge full back Jac Stone went over on the blind side for an unconverted try.

Weaver left the field at half time to be replaced by Archie Robinson, but soon after the start of the of the second half Old Centralians left wing Lewis May created space for the Cents centre partnership to ease over for a try. Centre Daniel Tyler made the touchdown, and Henning converted. The same combination almost scored again with a similar move but were brought back due to a marginal forward pass. The home side scored again when Brown went over on the right wing before a period when Trowbridge did their best attacking. But their cause was hampered by unfortunate mistakes like advancing over the half way line when kicking off and kick offs going directly into touch. These errors affected the flow of the game. Both backs and forwards contributed during Trowbridge’s better moments and Alex Murchison outpaced the defence to score a try in the corner with 10 minutes remaining. Centralians centre Daniel Tyler scored his second try with the last move of the match.

The forwards were well matched, but the Centralians defence was secure and they were able to take their chances in their backs with planned moves at crucial times.

Trowbridge have another difficult match next week when they host league leaders Royal Wootton Bassett, who continued their domination in the league when the beat Thornbury 69-0, while Chippenham, Drybrook, Keynsham and Swindon also won. As a result Trowbridge moved to fifth position. The club was encouraged by a draw for the 2nd team at second placed Warminster, and a win for the 3rds at Combe Down 2nds.
