For their first match of 2025 after attention was given to the unbeaten 2nd team in the last two weeks, Trowbridge welcomed the Gloucester side to Doric Park. They were runners up to Royal Wootton Bassett last season, but Trowbridge gained their first ever win at Gloucester in their away match in October and the Saintbridge side’s record has not been so impressive this term. They cut it a little fine by arriving at Doric Park just over half an hour before the kick off time of 2 o’clock.
Trowbridge started brightly going straight to attack in the early stages and skipper and No 8 Rory Murchison crossed the whitewash after 5 minutes with a break from the base of the scrum. Tom Weaver’s conversion hit the post, for what was going to be his only failed kick in the match as his kicking form this season continued to impress. The visitors were unable to build attacks in this period as the Trowbridge defence forced them into handling mistakes. The Doric Park side continued to dominate and after 17 minutes Alex Murchison scored before centre Ali Frost went over 10 minutes before the break. Weaver converted both tries. As the interval approached the Gloucester side did have a period when they threatened to score but despite forcing several penalties in the pressure zone, they were magnificently repelled by the Trowbridge defence and remained scoreless at the break. At one point a loose ball was hacked out of the home 22 by Weaver, who was left with the ball at his feet to run the length of the field. The official blew for a knock on from a distance to disallow a try as Weaver fell over the goal line.
When play restarted Trowbridge continued to make headway. After eight minutes Frost scored a second try after breaks from wing Joe Martindale and Archie Robertson, who had moved from full back to fly half to allow Weaver to withdraw temporarily. Then Robertson intercepted a wayward pass in the Centralians centre to sprint in for his own half to convert himself.
To their credit the visitors responded with tries from wingers Jevan Brown and Diontay King in each corner and Robertson was yellow carded under pressure defending at this point. There were then late tries from Harrison Wall, who was passed the ball over the line by Frost, and Frost was suspected to do so to avoid buying a jug for scoring a hat trick of tries. Alex Murchison completed the scoring when he broke through with the last move of the match with Weaver kicking the conversions.
With Chippenham losing for the second week running against Drybrook, Trowbridge in theory have the opportunity to catch them if they win their games in hand, but they have some difficult fixtures ahead starting with a trip next week to Longlevens who they have not played since the 1970s.
Player of the Match sponsored by Plumbase was awarded to Alex Murchison who had an excellent game.
Head Coach Ali Lund expressed his pleasure with the team's performance, stating, "I’m thrilled the boys managed to secure the double over Old Cent’s this season, especially considering they’ve traditionally been a tough side for us. We were really impressed with how the lads played, showing great variety in attack—breaking through up front while also exploiting opportunities on the outside. However, rugby has a way of keeping you humble, and we did experience a lapse in discipline during the second half, which allowed Old Cent’s to score a couple of disappointing tries. We’ll focus on addressing those areas in training as we prepare for our next challenge against a strong Longlevens team. We’d greatly appreciate the continued support from our travelling fans as we look to build on the strong results we’ve had so far this season."
