Trowbridge 1s v Oxford Quins Match Report

Oxford Quins 40 - Trowbridge 5

Despite plenty of endeavor and determination Trowbridge were unable to challenge high flying Oxford Quins on Saturday afternoon. Trowbridge started brightly and with a strong wind behind them spent plenty of time deep into Quins territory but too many missed tackles combined with a multitude of basic errors and Oxford thoroughly deserved their victory.

With record points scorer Tom Weaver, back row Angus Lean, centre Nigel Kershaw, wing Ashley Chalk and prop Lee Fairclough all missing from last weeks strong performance against Marlborough, Trowbridge knew they would be in for a hard game.

Oxford Quins kicked off and 2nd row Thomas Davies took superbly and charged into Oxford territory this was quickly followed by Ollie Weaver using the elements to his advantage to gain a 50-22 lineout unfortunately Trowbridge were not able to convert pressure into a try on this occasion.

They may have had limited possession but when Quins did have the ball they were asking a number of tough questions of the Trowbridge defence through some strong ball carrying and some excellent inter passing between forwards and backs. The signs were ominous at half time as despite a Jack Davies try Quins led 19-5 at the interval despite playing into a strong wind.

The 2nd half became more challenging for Trowbridge as they picked up a number of injuries leading to a number of forced changes and players having to play out of position. They still managed to compete but Quins were ruthless when opportunities presented themselves with open side flanker Jonny Ireland at the centre of many of their best attacks. Trowbridge will be pleased that heads did not drop, discipline was maintained and they kept challenging the Quins defence until the final whistle but they will also be aware that improvements will need to be made if they are to challenge the best sides in the league.
